A working life in drainage and contracting for the Derby Corporation led Derek Palmer to be involved in the demolition of many of the buildings demolished in Derby in the latter half of the twentieth century.
 
As a keen historian and Derby lover this ensured that it was his sympathetic eyes that oversaw the work and ensured that many of the memories of the buildings survived.
